In Saxony-Anhalt, a wintry weather situation with Black ice and freezing wetness led to numerous traffic problems. Particularly in the early hours of the morning, there were traffic jams on freeways and main roads. Traffic jams, accidents and considerable obstructions. The German Weather Service (DWD) had previously issued an official warning about the dangerous weather conditions.
Slippery roads and numerous accidents
According to the police, slippery roads led to a large number of traffic accidents, mostly with fender benders. Sections of the A2, A14 as well as several federal and country roads. In some cases, lanes had to be temporarily closed to recover vehicles involved in accidents and to make the roads safe.
There were also considerable delays in rush-hour traffic. Drivers needed considerably more time for their journeys, while the winter road clearance service was in constant use in many places to make the roads passable again.
DWD warning of black ice and freezing rain
The DWD warned for large parts of Saxony-Anhalt of Black ice due to freezing rain and freezing wetness. Bridges, shady stretches of road and side roads were particularly dangerous. The authorities strongly advised this, avoid unnecessary trips and significantly reduce the speed.
