The cyber threat situation in Germany remains critical: The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has presented a current situation report, according to which cyber spies are increasingly targeting authorities and administration.
According to the report, there has also been a significant number of attacks and damage in the judiciary, security authorities and in defense - at the same time, the BSI assumes that there is a large undetected field of undiscovered incidents. The authority continues to classify the IT security situation as tense and is calling on companies, authorities and citizens to take increased protective measures.

Meanwhile, IT security expert Markus Beckedahl criticizes serious deficits in the preparation for large-scale hacker attacks. „I fear that we are very poorly prepared for this,“ warned Beckedahl in the ZDF morning show. If a massive hacker attack were to occur, Germany would be left „helpless and headless“. Failures in recent years - from a lack of encryption to a confusion of competencies between various authorities - would now take their revenge.
Beckedahl is therefore calling for clearer responsibilities, better equipped security authorities and Europe's own digital infrastructure that is independent of the USA. According to the expert, every cyber attack is ultimately an attack on institutions and trust in democracy. He calls for significantly higher investment in IT security so that Germany does not sink into chaos in the event of an emergency.
