The German Weather Service (DWD) has launched a new online „natural hazards portal“ that centrally bundles warnings of natural events. On the website, citizens can access up-to-date information on potential hazards such as flooding or storm surges at their location at any time. The portal brings together warning messages from various institutions - such as weather warnings from the DWD, flood and storm surge warnings and civil protection messages from the Modular Warning System (MoWaS).

This content has been integrated in an initial expansion stage; in future, the service is to be gradually expanded to include other natural hazards such as ozone pollution, forest fires, drought, avalanches and earthquakes.

The creators place particular emphasis on user-friendliness: an interactive map shows current warnings color-coded by intensity, and users can selectively show or hide warning categories.

The portal also offers a „Hazards and risks“ section with maps for risk assessment at your own place of residence as well as the „Prevention and action“ section with practical tips on damage prevention and what to do in an emergency.
According to Environment Minister Petra Berg, the offer contributes to „improving the necessary awareness and thus the population's own precautions.“.

The platform was developed together with federal and state authorities and is now available online.
