DWD declares red warning level: Black ice in southern Germany

The south of Germany is currently experiencing one of the most dangerous icy conditions in recent years. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official severe weather warning until Monday morning at 9 am. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are particularly affected: In around 50 districts, warning level red applies, triggered by sudden freezing rain and heavy ice build-up on roads, sidewalks and vehicles.

According to meteorologists, there is an acute danger to life and limb in some places. It is strongly recommended to avoid unnecessary driving and spending time outdoors. Anyone who is nevertheless on the road should be careful, reduce their speed and not set off without preparation. A full tank, sufficient warm blankets, spare clothing and hot drinks on board are particularly important.

Why your car becomes a safe place to stay in an emergency

When roads are closed, vehicles slide or break down and traffic jams form over several kilometers, the car can quickly become an indispensable shelter. Black ice often means that emergency services make slower progress, roads are blocked and it is sometimes impossible to continue driving for hours.

In such situations, it is often safer to stay in the car instead of falling or freezing to death outside. A vehicle offers wind protection, some residual warmth, visibility and, ideally, basic supplies - if you are prepared.
