The German Weather Service (DWD) warns at the beginning of the week of dangerous icy conditions in large parts of Germany. The trigger is a weather situation in which freezing rain hits cold or frozen ground. Roads, sidewalks and traffic areas can become slippery within a very short space of time. The period in the early hours of the morning is particularly critical.

Freezing rain meets frost

After wintry temperatures and snowfall, temperatures rise slightly in some regions before precipitation sets in. However, the rain immediately freezes on the ground, forming a barely visible layer of ice. This so-called Black ice situation is considered particularly dangerous because it often occurs suddenly and even gritted surfaces become slippery again within a short time.

Storm warnings and restrictions on school operations

In several federal states, the DWD Severe weather warnings for black ice issued. The states affected include North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg and Saarland. The authorities are talking about a Danger to life and limb, especially in road traffic.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, as a precautionary measure, the Classroom teaching suspended nationwide on 12.01.2026. Schools switch to distance learning, emergency care remains in place. Schools also remain closed in parts of Lower Saxony to avoid risky journeys to school.

Regional differences in weather conditions

While freezing rain dominates in the west and southwest, it will remain partly wintry with snow and frost in the east and north. Slippery conditions may also occur there during the course of the day if snow turns to rain or wetness freezes again. Meteorologists do not expect the situation to ease gradually until later in the day.

Effects on traffic and everyday life

The icy conditions have a significant impact on everyday life:

  • Road traffic: Increased risk of accidents, slippery roads, possible closures
  • Public transportation: Delays and restrictions due to icy tracks and points
  • Schools and daycare centers: Lessons canceled or distance learning in affected regions
  • General everyday life: Longer travel times, increased caution for pedestrians

Authorities and weather services urgently advise, postpone unnecessary trips and to obtain regular information on the current situation.
