Winter currently has Germany firmly in its grip. A combination of heavy snowfall and dangerous black ice is causing considerable disruption in many regions. Meteorologists are warning of a tense weather situation that is affecting traffic, infrastructure and everyday life in equal measure.

Snow roller brings widespread fresh snow

A weather-active front is moving across large parts of the country and causing persistent snowfall. In numerous regions, snowfall is expected within a short period of time. 10 to 15 centimeters of fresh snow expected, locally even more. The situation is particularly problematic where temperatures remain permanently below freezing and the snow can hardly melt. Roads become slippery or impassable and rail traffic is also affected.

DWD officially warns of black ice

Parallel to the snowfall, the German Weather Service (DWD) for large parts of Germany Official warnings of black ice pronounced. The cause is freezing rain or freezing wetness, which can lead to slippery roads, especially in the evening and at night. Bridges, side roads and uncleared paths are particularly dangerous.
