The German Weather Service (DWD) had previously warned of wintry road conditions for large parts of the federal state.

The DWD warned of Black ice, slush and freezing wetness, which pose an increased risk of accidents, especially in the early hours of the morning. Drivers were advised to significantly reduce their speed, maintain greater distances and avoid non-essential journeys wherever possible.
