The winter low „Elli“ is currently causing considerable disruption in large parts of Germany. Heavy snowfall, gale-force winds and slippery roads are causing traffic problems in some regions and the first school closures. The German Weather Service warns of a tense weather situation that could last into the weekend.

Northern, eastern and parts of central Germany are particularly affected. Snowfall and wind are coming together there, causing snow drifts and severely limited visibility. In some regions, several centimetres of fresh snow have fallen within a short space of time, in some cases significantly more at higher altitudes.

Traffic severely affected

There are slippery roads, packed snow and delays on many roads. Drivers are reporting gridlocked traffic, broken-down vehicles and closed routes. Rail traffic is also affected: Trains are running more slowly, delays and occasional cancellations are the result.

The combination of snow, wind and cold makes the situation particularly challenging. Snow drifts can form in open areas, making roads impassable again within a short space of time.

School absences and restrictions in everyday life

As a precautionary measure, authorities in several regions have Schools closed or switched to distance learning, as safe routes to school can no longer be guaranteed. Parents are asked to find out about the local regulations at short notice.

There are also restrictions in public life: Delivery services are delayed, appointments are canceled and in many places it is recommended to postpone non-essential journeys.

Risk of black ice even away from the snowy regions

While snow dominates in the north and east, there is an additional danger in parts of the west and south from freezing wetness. Rain on frozen ground can lead to black ice - a particularly dangerous situation for road users and pedestrians.

Relaxation at the weekend at the earliest

Meteorologists expect the weather situation to calm down only slowly. It will remain cold in the coming days, with the possibility of more snow falling locally. A gradual easing is only expected towards the weekend, accompanied by frosty nights.
