There are things you can't afford to lose. Things that are so important that losing them in a crisis is almost more serious than a lack of food or light. These are Documents<\/strong> - ID cards, birth certificates, insurance policies - and of course Valuables<\/strong>, which can be a kind of life insurance in an emergency.<\/p>\n

A power cut, a house fire or even looting after a disaster: These are all scenarios that we don't like to imagine. But as preppers, we should ask ourselves one question: Where do I keep the things that are indispensable?<\/em><\/p>\n

Why are safe hiding places so important?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Valuables and documents are often taken for granted in everyday life. The ID card is in the wallet, jewelry is in the bedside table, contracts are in a folder on the shelf. But all this is only unproblematic as long as life runs smoothly.<\/p>\n

If a crisis occurs, three problems arise:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Access from outside<\/strong>Burglars or looters are specifically looking for cash, jewelry and papers.<\/li>\n
  2. Natural hazards<\/strong>Water, fire or moisture can destroy papers.<\/li>\n
  3. Escape<\/strong>If you have to leave quickly, you need your most important documents to hand.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A good hiding place is therefore not a luxury, but a building block of emergency preparedness.<\/p>\n

    Types of hiding places - the basic idea<\/strong><\/p>\n

    There are two main categories:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Quickly accessible hiding places<\/strong> - for things that you need to take with you immediately in an emergency.<\/li>\n
    • Long-term hiding places<\/strong> - for valuables that need to be stored safely, even if you don't need them for weeks or months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The balance is crucial. What use is a safe that you have bolted down in the cellar if you don't have time to open it in the event of an evacuation?<\/p>\n

      Classic solutions<\/strong><\/p>\n

      1. The safe<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        A safe is the classic - heavy, solid, lockable. It protects against fire and burglars if it is properly anchored. But: a small safe in a cupboard is quickly carried out, a large one takes up space and is conspicuous.<\/p>\n

        1. Safe deposit box<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Only suitable for preppers to a limited extent. In a crisis, access to the bank may be blocked. Practical in everyday life, risky in a state of emergency.<\/p>\n

          1. Document folder in escape backpack<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Useful for the most important documents: copies of ID cards, emergency numbers, vaccination card, perhaps some cash. But it does not replace a fixed hiding place.<\/p>\n

            Creative hiding places in your own home<\/strong><\/p>\n

            Burglars have experience. They know the classics: drawers, mattresses, vases. Those who are clever think around corners.<\/p>\n

            Examples of unusual hiding places:<\/strong><\/p>\n

            • In a seemingly empty Tin can<\/strong> with a double bottom.<\/li>\n
            • Behind a Light switch cover<\/strong> (without power connection, of course).<\/li>\n
            • Under Baseboards<\/strong> or in a loose tile.<\/li>\n
            • In a wrong book<\/strong> on the shelf.<\/li>\n
            • In the Vacuum cleaner bag<\/strong> (unless you are cleaning).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Some papers cannot be replaced or can only be replaced at great expense. Others are needed immediately to get help.<\/p>\n

              You should definitely back up:<\/strong><\/p>\n

              • Identity card & passport<\/li>\n
              • Birth and marriage certificates<\/li>\n
              • Insurance policies<\/li>\n
              • Land register extracts, purchase contracts<\/li>\n
              • Vaccination and health records<\/li>\n
              • Digital: password lists, access data (encrypted)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                Tip: Make copies of all important documents - one digital version on an encrypted USB stick, one on paper.<\/p>\n

                Two-level strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n

                Most experts recommend a mixture:<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. Quick access folder<\/strong>in an escape backpack or in a fixed place near the front door.<\/li>\n
                2. Long-term storage<\/strong>in concealed containers, preferably fireproof and waterproof.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  So you are equipped for both spontaneous departures and long-term protection.<\/p>\n

                  Mistakes to avoid<\/strong><\/p>\n

                    \n
                  • Store everything in one place<\/strong>: Tempting for thieves, risky in case of fire.<\/li>\n
                  • Too complicated to hide<\/strong>If you need 15 minutes yourself, this is counterproductive in an emergency.<\/li>\n
                  • Do not have copies<\/strong>: Originals can be destroyed - copies save everyday life.<\/li>\n
                  • Focus only on technology<\/strong>Digital backups are good, but what if there's no power or internet?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    Practice: Hiding places outside<\/strong><\/p>\n

                    Sometimes it is wiser not to store everything in the house. A garden or even the woods nearby can offer additional options.<\/p>\n

                      \n
                    • Waterproof PVC pipes<\/strong> buried in the ground.<\/li>\n
                    • Metal crates<\/strong> hermetically sealed and marked.<\/li>\n
                    • Under garden furniture or in wall recesses<\/strong> camouflaged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      Important: mark well without anyone recognizing it - and check regularly to see if moisture has penetrated.<\/p>\n

                      Personal touch<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      I still remember finding a \u201ebook\u201c on an older relative's shelf that turned out to be a small safe. Inside: a bundle of banknotes and an old family passport. \u201eIf there's ever a fire or someone comes, at least I know where to reach first,\u201c he said. I smiled at that at the time. Today I see it differently.<\/p>\n

                      Metaphor - the squirrel principle<\/strong><\/p>\n

                      Preppers can learn from squirrels. They don't put their nuts in one place, but spread them out over many hiding places. In this way, they ensure that there is always a supply left over, even if someone finds or destroys a place. The same principle applies to documents and valuables.<\/p>\n

                      Practical step-by-step instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n

                        \n
                      1. Create list<\/strong>Which documents and valuables are really important?<\/li>\n
                      2. Make copies<\/strong>digital and analog.<\/li>\n
                      3. Prepare quick access folder<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
                      4. Create hiding places in the house<\/strong> - at least 2-3 pieces.<\/li>\n
                      5. Optional: External hiding places<\/strong> in the garden or in safe places.<\/li>\n
                      6. Regular checks<\/strong>Check once a year that everything is intact.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                        Conclusion - safety through prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n

                        A good hiding place is not a sign of mistrust, but of foresight. It means that you are protecting your most important assets, regardless of whether it is a fire, burglary or escape.<\/p>\n
