Examples: dry grasses, birch bark, cotton fabric, absorbent cotton, pine shavings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>kindling:<\/strong> Thin branches and shavings that catch fire immediately.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Firewood:<\/strong> Larger pieces that keep the fire alive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An old rule of thumb: \u201eTake twice as much tinder and three times as much kindling as you think you need.\u201c Because the flame often goes out faster than you would like.<\/p>\n<h2>Methods for lighting a fire without a lighter<\/h2>\n<h3>1. fire steel (ferrocerium stick)<\/h3>\n<p>Probably the best-known helper in the survival sector. A small metal rod that produces sparks when scraped.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How it works:<\/strong> Scrape over the stick with a sharp piece of metal (back of a knife). Wood against wood, friction generates heat, heat generates embers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Material:<\/strong> Spindle (straight stick), fireboard (soft wood), bow with string (bow drill), handpiece.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Procedure:<\/strong> Place the spindle on the board, move it back and forth quickly with the bow and apply pressure. After a few minutes, dark, smoking powder is produced which ignites.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advantage:<\/strong> Works without metal if you have mastered the technique.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disadvantage:<\/strong> Extremely strenuous, error-prone, requires a lot of practice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is said that those who have mastered fire-drilling have truly understood the essence of survival.<\/p>\n<h3>3. fire plow<\/h3>\n<p>Less well known, but similar to fire drilling.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How it works:<\/strong> A hard stick is pushed over a soft board in a notch.
